Creative peace and human rights work with youth in Quibdo

The life of the afro-Columbian youth in Quibdo (Choco) is characterized by poverty and violence. 65 % of the inhabitants are children and youth. The region Choco has the highest poverty and unemployment rates in the country and few future perspectives. Next to poverty, afro-Columbian youth are target of social discrimination and have to face manifold violence.

An AGEH-project, coordinated by peace worker Michaela Pfister, provides a creative break for the young adults: "Basketbeat", the rhythmic sound of basketballs, helps the participants to get a distance from their all- to-day problems and offers them space for new perspectives on themselves and their environment.

Pfister says: "Youth here experiences the recruitment by legal and illegal armed outfits on a daily basis. They are confronted with drug abuse and trafficking, gang life, prostitution, racketeering and murder. Still, most of society closes their eyes on them and the local politicians show no interest for them neither." (AGEH Website)

The CPS project "Los Inquietos" strengthens the participants with sports, music and education programs. Open to all interested young adults, participants find a choice of hip hop, dance and audiovisual courses. The hip hop project "Raise your voice and body" for example reaches a wide audience via television and internet and allows the youth to express their life style, their grievances and their demands towards their rights and towards justice.
